I would recommend that before applying for a job on these boards, you research the company using glassdoor dot com.

These postings always baffle me. This one first of all doesn't even require a real university degree, just what used to be called a diploma, but through word-creep is now an "Associates Degree" plus minimal years of experience. But then it goes on to list as requirements a range of expertise that could hardly be mastered in a lifetime. Finally - a first! - there are physical requirements! "Sitting and keying for the duration of the shift" is not only bad ergonomics, but certainly doesn't lend itself to creative programming. And sounds like slave labour to boot.

Couldn't agree more George! It's Amazing the list of skills being asked for yet minimal description of project if there even is one. After 20 years of doing this work I see more generalists and less specialist which hurts the market for everyone involved including the hiring company who ends up with the short stick on every draw. I thought I was the only one recognizing this trend....

I can't comment on specialist vs generalist because I'm the classic jack-of-all-trades master-of-none. Coding is perhaps only a quarter of what do. But to add to my comment above, if someone is posting a job here, the main **requirement** should surely be FOCUS / WebFOCUS experience. Everything else falls into the realm of "nice to have". And many of them require experience required with one specific relational database, when in fact the major brands are so similar that it is only in unusual situations that it makes any difference - and those things can be learned on the fly.

George- An associate degree is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by community colleges, junior colleges, technical colleges, bachelor's degree–granting colleges, and universities upon completion of a course of study usually lasting two years.

I think that there is a general job description that gets posted, regardless of the project or requirements needed for many of these jobs.

Those of us with a lifetime of experience in Focus/WebFocus sometimes don't have a university degree of any kind. When we got into IT they often weren't required. I have one, but it is not in anything IT related. I agree in this instance it is probably a nice to have. I also agree these are just boilerplate job listings.

Kevin, what you say is true: My degrees are in geography and geochemistry.

My beef above was really about inflation of credentials - everyone has to have a title these days and everyone gets to inflate their academic achievements. Heck, kids even "graduate" from kindergarten these days. Back in the day, my high school English teacher admonished us that you only graduate once- that's why we talk about undergraduates at universities... So I'm fine with a 2-year college Diploma. I just don't think it should be called a degree of any kind.

This is what was prepared by our HR dept. So ease up on the messenger. So a little more about the posting...

The main focus of the role will be Web Focus and working with Relationa DB's. Using App Studio to Create Metadata and report development, so either Web Focus or some other report application experience is very relevant to the position. The position will also be working on design and implementation of a relational DB, working with both SQL and Oracle DB's.

We have new db development along with several existing reporting applications that we are working toward merging into the WebFocus environment, which is why the experience requested is extensive. With the new data being captured and not currently reported, it is critical to understanding reporting and Relational DB's development.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Pegs,

You just wrote a nice, clear, explanation of what the job requirements are. If that had been your original advert, there wouldn't have been a whole lot of snarky comments from the likes of me.
