Folks,

Those of you who know me as the grumpy old guy that I am also know that I frequently moan about the job postings here that are so specific that no-one could possibly fill them. Well, since I'm 67, the boss has decided that he wants someone to act as my backup in case I drop dead. Somehow he seems to think that there are numerous clones of me out there who will work for peanuts like me and insists that the job description encompass most of what I do. So here it is. WebFOCUS programming is but one part and not even the main part, but if there is someone out there who would like to do a bunch of the other stuff with some WF on the side, we invite you to apply!

Ridiculous isn't it. What I've been trying to explain to the young boss is that in me he gets the specialization of 30 years working for the same company, and in reality there are at least 3 different areas of interest here, which he isn't going to get in one person.

So the truth is that if someone meets even 20% of the criteria and expresses an interest in learning/doing the rest, they will be considered for the position. My current assistant has just announced that he's going off to become an Android programmer (he's not so interested in hardware or holding the hands of users) so some degree of desperation has set in, because I refuse to go and work in Miami.

Smiler I'm not going anywhere except perhaps into a well-deserved retirement where I can fly my plane on any nice day that comes along.

This position is for my assistant and eventual replacement. I've been a one-man IT department for 28 of the last 30 years, and supported the company both in person and remotely with 99.99% uptime even though the main operation moved from Toronto to Miami in 1999.
(Incidentally I still have the original IBM PC that was the file server (!!) for the entire company when I started in 1985).

Miami is fine for a two-week vacation, but quite frankly the flat landscape and the pervasive culture of acquisitiveness don't appeal to me, so I'll be staying in the Great White North or relocating to Europe or Bermuda, where I was born, when I finally do hang up my keyboard.

Is that literally a real plane? That'd be awesome!

It's nice to work a week or two in Miami once for a while, but still prefer the cold white north, lol!

Yes, it's a real plane. Same model as these:

As for winter, I've learned that the trick is take winter holidays not necessarily to where the beaches are warm, but to places where one can actually enjoy what winter has to offer. So I spend a month in Austria, doing some skiing, but mostly enjoying the scenery, food and drink. Did I say holidays? As a one man IT department, that's never really true of course. I have to keep 9 real and numerous virtual servers going, and tend to the needs of 50 or so users in 6 different countries, occasionally dashing off a new report as well, so it's never really a holiday.

What is the probability of your company surviving your retirement?

In my book, it is skiing in the Alps in winter, scuba diving on an island in summer.

Well ... If I flew my plane into the ground tomorrow the company would be in deep doo-doo. It would probably survive, but they would find out double-quick that their costs for IT support have quadrupled or quintupled as they start to pay contract prices for everything. It's a long story and this is probably not the right place for it, but suffice it to say that I've put the company ahead of myself for many years and I'm paying dearly for it. PM me if you want the gory details ... Smiler
