We are trying to read a JSON file via https protocol. Although adapter works fine and the file is readable, it doesn't display characters in UTF-8, changing the synonym codepage to UTF-8 has no effect. Problem is with characters like ä,ö,ü etc. Does anyone know why JSON adapter behaves like this and what to do about it?

Open a case with tech support. I opened this as a case a while ago. It was fixed and is in a newer version than the one you are using.
