Silent Install of iWay server version 7.1.3

Hi All,

Hopefully one of the iWay project team will have their eyes and ears on this.

In documentation / supplied files, there exists an option file for a silent install of the reporting server but not for the client server.

Does anyone have a sample file (hopefully Doc Services might be able to help / chase?) of an options file for the client?

I have been chasing this through hottrack for a while now with no luck (case 22092027) so I am hoping that this route might help.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tony,

I received the following information from one of our writers:

As documented with the server, try navigating to the directory where the server installation files are and issuing:
isetup ?
or for windows
setup.exe ?

This shows you the options you can use.

In 7.1.3 and higher, an iWay Client is just another configuration of the server. The installation files and procedure are the same. Use the same options as the server, but use the client license. However the host and port options are for the server you access rather than the local client "server." Client "server" always is the localhost on ports 8128, 8129, and 8131

For example:
-inst
-license nnn-nnn-nnnn[-nn]
-edahome E:\ibi2\ibi\client76\home
-edaconf E:\ibi2\ibi\client76\cln
-port 8120
-host localhost
-approot E:\ibi2\ibi\apps
-programfolder "iWay 76 Client"
-pass password
-nostart

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need additional information.

Regards,
Jenn

Thanks Jennifer, but I understand the options available with the setup.exe. There is one that can be used to record the installation parameters, but I don't have the luxury of being able to action that process again Frowner. Also the options file for the client server is far more involved than that for the reporting server hence the original case to request a sample file.

Hopefully one will be forthcoming on the case, but this was an alternative method just in case someone in the WebFOCUS world already had a sample.

One thing I would ask of you is to encourage the inclusion of a sample file in the documentaton or, better still, a sample file contained in the installation files.

Forgot to mention that one of the biggest differences in the install is that the client license is only four digits long and the option to install (or not) report caster is also required during the install.

I think there may be some confusion.

Are you referring to the iWay Client or the WebFOCUS Client?

  • iWay Client is normally not installed manually for WebFOCUS. It is installed silently as part of WebFOCUS 7.1. It is used to communicate with the server and installed in the client76 directory. It can be installed separately for use with iWay Data Migrator or iWay Connector applications. It has a 10 digit license code.
  • WebFOCUS Client installs, depending on license, WebFOCUS Web components, MR, BID, Servlet, ReportCaster, and embeds an iWay Client. It has a 4 digit license code.

A silent installation of WebFOCUS Client is documented in the Chapter 4 of the WebFOCUS and ReportCaster Installation and Configuration Manuals for Windows and UNIX. To record options, you use:

-options-record filename

This can not be done with the single file installation you download. If you download a single file installation, run it once and choose to save the extracted files (as explained in chapter 4).

Silent installations are not supported on z/OS.

Hi Jenn,

Thanks for the info but I had already read all of that and my hope was to get an example "options" file for the silent install as one is not contained within the installation CD (Windows / WebFOCUS Client) as it is with the Reporting Server CD.

I thought that it would be a simple request as I am sure that the product group would have tested a silent install as part of their overall product testing. I assumed wrong, as I have been asking for a sample file for a long period of time.

I know you can do an install with the -record option and produce a sample file but I did not have access to a machine where I could do this and I thought that ...... (see above).

I got so frustrated with a seeming inability to supply a sample file (there must be one out there somewhere?) that I bought a new machine and ran an install with the -record option. An expense I would rather not have incurred. Please note that the machine has now been restored to delivered state and a WebFOCUS client install no longer exists on this machine.

The upshot is that I now have a sample options file that I can modify for any WebFOCUS Client install on a Windows platform.

My advice to anybody about to embark on a new install or an upgrade, is to run with the -record option and save the file produced in a very safe location. If you have any need for an identical install later on then you have a file ready. In fact it would be advisable for any IB person performing an install for a Customer to use the -record option and leave the file as part of the install documentation. It may prove useful in the long run!!

I am even going to add a sample file as the next posting in the hope that it may help someone with the same simple request.

The options file in all it's glory .....

Please note that there are a lot of values that are required and the best method is to follow the install instructions and compile your values and then go through this file and enter them in the correct places.

To run a silent install on Windows, open a command prompt and navigate to the folder on your CD (or where ever you have the install files) where the "webfocus.exe" file resides.
Then issue the command -

webfocus.exe -options "C:\wf_client.txt" -silent

Where "C:\wf_client.txt" is the name and location of your options file.
