Welcome to the new Data Science Forum on Focal Point
Welcome to the new Data Science Forum on Focal Point. Here we discuss all things related to data science, machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of WebFOCUS. As forum moderator and Information Builder's product manager for RStat, Adapter for Python, Adapter for Rserve (R), and WebFOCUS Narrative Charts I look forward to our lively discussions.

How can you you get started with AI and machine learning?

I recommend the online classes from Andrew Ng at Coursera.org (audit for free; reasonable registration fee to submit quizzes and projects for grading, certificate with passing grade):

1. AI for Everyone https://www.coursera.org/learn/ai-for-everyone/
2. (Introduction to) Machine Learning https://www.coursera.org/learn/machine-learning
3. Deep Learning Specialization https://www.coursera.org/speci...ations/deep-learning

The Deep Learning Specialization uses Python and many AI/ML APIs are written in Python or have Python wrappers. Where to learn Python? Some suggestions are:

1. Real Python https://realpython.com/python-basics/
2. From edX.org https://www.edx.org/learn/python
3. From coursera.org https://www.coursera.org/collections/learn-python
3. From the source, Python.org https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide

Hi Frans,

We are working on samples that will be posted to the Information Builders GitHub site. I will post a message on the forum when the samples are available.

Hi, Frans.

I did some posts in this data science forum pointing to my blog articles and GitHub: https://github.com/dlautzenheiser/WebFOCUS/. You will find sample FOCUS, R, and Python procedures there.

Sincerely,

Doug Lautzenheiser
Multiple products (FOCUS, WebFOCUS, iWay), releases (4-8.2), platforms (e.g., MVS, OpenVMS, Linux, iSeries, Windows), databases (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, IMS, Hyperstage, etc.), integrated technologies (e.g., C/C++, R, Python)
Currently doing great things on WF8.2

The built-in R and Python features let WebFOCUS use those languages as functions in DEFINEs/COMPUTEs, which is great.

My WebFOCUS examples are different, in that they use R and Python to extract full sets of data, generate metadata, and then have WebFOCUS format the answer sets.

Last year, I submitted a Summit presentation on this but IB did not accept it. If I tried again for June 2020, would anybody be interested in attending?

Sincerely,

Doug Lautzenheiser
