1. allow passive audience, people who stand in the back and don't have to take up a computer, who just want to know what the point of the lab is.
2. get to the point sooner. actually, get to the point right away, show the code for whatever you're doing, and let people decide if they need to stay or not.

This year (2004) we will also have a different kind of lab. Its more of a 'Practicum'. Only the instructor has a live terminal and goes clicking thru the material. This way everyone sees how its done, but its a faster way to present the features.
