Is the file indexed on the fields in your report's WHERE clauses? Have you tried rebuilding the indexes?

This is not a simple answer.

What is the structure of the XFOCUS file, the master file.

What is the FOCUS code ?

to Waz's point it is not a straight forward answer. if it is a poorly designed and indexed XFOCUS DB or conversely a poorly/un-predicated report request your performance will suffer just like any other database. However, we do 85% of our end-user,self service reporting utilizing XFOCUS db's (many in excess of the 4Gb you have)w/ MDI's and on average we can return our results in under 2 seconds. thats on 2.5 million self serveice requests annually across 3000 active users. the MDI is the key and it is part art and science to getting them correct for your reporting utilization.

And to answer your question it also depends on the segments you used in the database and the way you want it in the report.

Maybe you should post more details on both the database master and the query.
