Hi,

I need to replace to Number to character.
I have one input file and it contains 5 digit number value like 12345. i need to replace this value to ABCDE and store to focus file.

can you please give me some idea how to do this one?

You can use the EDIT function to convert an integer to an alpha. E.g.
FLDA/A5=EDIT(FLDI);
assume that the format of FLDI is an A5. This is just an example.

If your numeric field is format P, F, or D, use PTOA and FTOA respectively to convert to alpha. The format for these functions can be found in the Functions manual or in Help.

Hard to say, Waz. You have to go with what he asked first. Then if it is more complex, he'll have to give us more detail. Is it a fixform input string to a MODIFY? Does he want to overlay a portion of a file? I tend to start with the KISS method and go up from there.

Plus he hasn't responded. Confused

Good point, Waz!

Raghuraman, you can use EDIT or PTOA/FTOA as mentioned above to convert your numeric field to a string; p.e. 12345 will be represented as '12345'.

Once you have that, you may use the STRREP function to replace your digits with letters. You may need to use the STRREP multiple times, most likely once for each digit you will be converting.

Check for documentation a/o examples on STRREP and the other functions previously mentioned.

Thi is just a failing on my part, I read the question and in trying to understand the question, analyse it too much.

The question still remains though.

Why ask to convert 12345 to ABCDE, and not 12345 to "12345"

Maybe he is trying to implement some type of weak encryption? It's hard to tell until he decides to provide more detailed information.
