Ana,

You didn't mention the type of data source and maybe some relational engines have a way to do this on the WHERE clause.

But the only thing I can think of is, in a DEFINE, doing an RJUST then an EDIT to get the first n characters greater than 11. Then test that for not equal to spaces.

How does that sound?

Seems to me there exists a user written subroutine that does the length of a string, but I can't recall and am at home so no manual close. Would have to do a define though anyway, hopefully you have other selection criteria as defines and selections on defined fields add overhead.

Hi Ana,

This shows how to print all cars by country:

DEFINE FILE CAR
CAR_LEN/I3 = ARGLEN(16, CAR, CAR_LEN);
END
-*
TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT
CAR
CAR_LEN
BY COUNTRY
END
-*

This shows how to print cars by country that have a length greater than 6:

TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT
CAR
CAR_LEN
BY COUNTRY
WHERE CAR_LEN GT 6
END

VIN_LEN

You used A17, should have been I7 the answer is a number. I3 will hold up to 999.

And thanks Tony, try to keep the old brain cells active.

That's what we're all here for to help, I learn almost every day myself. Welcome to the wonderful world of WebFOCUS.

Oh and before Francis Winkasks, you might want to update your profile to say what version you are using unless of course the 714 is it then my appologies.
