I need some direction on this. We have customers that want to use Projects under DevStudio 7.1.6. We do not use local host, we use the WebFOCUS client on AIX (Websphere 6) and access data on MVS. Will we need to install TomCat on the developer's desktop in order for this to work?

Any gotchas? Tips techniques?
Thanks in advance.

No tomcat is needed.

In devstudio click file then show environments
select the environment you want and select properties.

select Project development and uncheck Use Default and select the server you want to use

No. Just have them go to Show Environments, highlight the AIX environment, and then click the Set Development Environment button on the right. That will show the projects on the AIX server.

However, a word of caution. I have the same physical environment as you do, WAS6 on AIX, and you must know that if you use Projects all files created there will be owned by root. If you then try to update them from Data Servers, you will get permission problems. We do everything in Data Servers. And in 7.6.5 this has been improved so that you can open ftm files in the Text Editor which was a facility that was removed when 7.x first came own.

So use AIX/Unix projects at your own risk. Sweating

Actually, the owner will not become root by default, but rather it will be the id of the process that started WAS. In Ginny's case this is obviously the root process.
One of my clients also has this setup and there te owner is some generic account that will allow changing the files. I do not know how they implemented this, but it does work.

In our case, the WAS environment is managed and maintained by IGS (IBM) and for security reasons would not open this up.

At another site, I used Sun Solaris with Tomcat and the Unix admin set it up the same way.

Thanks for all the help. I thought it was that simple and straight forward. We have found that when using Change Mangement for MRE the owner of the process is for webapps. Simple solution was to open the directory so that the webapps admin could write to the extract directory.

Hello again,

I successfully created the project, however I cannot 'see' any of the fex or mfd that are in the directories. What did I miss?

Selected the AIXSERVE for the data server
Selected the AIXSERVE for Project Development
Set the development environment - refresh the status
Did I need to set the Web Component Authorization?

Thanks!

Go up to the toolbar and depress the binoculars. You will see everything but the icons will be opaque. Right-click on the ones you want and select 'add to project'. Then click the binoculars again and you won't see the rest of the files that you don't want in the project.
