[CLOSED] exl2k - xht filetype and opening saved file
We have an issue that if we create a report in exl2k, it will open and display fine in excel. If after we open the file, we try to save the xls report, the filename is "abc.xls" and the save as type is web page (*.htm; *.html). If we do a save as soon as prompted instead of an open and then a save, the problem does not seem to happen. We need to be able to save either way. This happens even with simple code like: TABLE FILE CAR PRINT CAR MODEL SEATS BY COUNTRY ON TABLE PCHOLD FORMAT EXL2K END
Is there a way to get exl2k to recognize the file as xls instead of htm/html or to fix this problem?
Thanks. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Kerry,
1) Click on MyComputer 2) Folder Options 3) File Types 4) See if XHT/XLS is in the list 5) If yes, Click CHANGE 6) If no, click NEW, Input XHT/XLS, Click OK, Click CHANGE 7) Select Microsoft Excel 8) VOILA!!!!
Instead of using file type of web page (*.htm; *.html) select a save file type of Excel file (*.xls).

We realize that we can do that, but we have thousands of customers and they won't remember/notice to make the change (they didn't need to make the change when we were just on excel and we're just converting them to exl2k). So we were trying to figure out a way to fix the problem so that they don't have to manually change it each time.
Picking up on an old post here, but we have exactly the same issue that Pam raised in 2006...
When we save a report in format EXL2K and then go to save this file from within Excel, the default file type offered is:
"Web Page (*.htm; *.html)"
The user has to remember to go down the list of formats to select Microsoft Office Excel Workbook (*.xls)
I have Tom's method of adding the file type XHT to Windows but his hasn't changed anything.
Thanks

see if your sysadmin can invoke some global change- maybe in group poliy editor (not sure im no sysadmin) or one of the other admin tools to automatically apply toms suggestion to every machine....

Hi Nubi,
That would be fine, except that Tom's solution did not fix the problem for me or the OP.
Cheers

Did anyone ever get a fix to this? I have a few reports being sent out to several customers. Most of them remember to check the save format but some still forget and we always have to ask them to resave the file. A fix to this issue would be very helpful and save a lot of time on going back and forth.
