I am chasing down some performance issue and have noticed in the SYSCOLUMN master that I have an extraordinary number of records for the RELNAME field in SYSCOLUM

Does anyone know what this field is for, how it gets there, how it's used, and why would I have so many records?

I have never paid attention to this field before but it is labeled related field name. If you run this query below it shows all the fields related to each field in a master file. In the case with the car file it shows all fields in the hierarchy of the focus table. Look at the WARRANTY field vs DEALER_COST

TABLE FILE SYSCOLUM
PRINT RELNAME
BY TBNAME
BY NAME
WHERE TBNAME EQ 'CAR'
ON TABLE PCHOLD FORMAT HTML
END

I would avoid using this field in a report against syscolum it would return a lot of data.

Hello Chuck,

Ok, that is interesting.

Is there a way to find out if it is used anywhere?

I ran your example and see that 20 fields turns into 334 lines of output. I see now how they are related. Can you provide any insight or explanation how they are used?

I see it as a clear example why the PATH should be kept as short as possible because 1 master turns into 334 data points. We have 400M values of RELNAME in syscolum and I think it's slowing down something. (because it takes a while to read 400M records)

Any insight when and where RELNAME is actually used?

I think the only way to find that out is to open a case with techsupport.
