I have a fex file like below:

-*SQL Passthru
ENGINE SQLORA SET DEFAULT_CONNECTION &DB_CONN_NAME
SQL SQLORA PREPARE SQLOUT FOR
SELECT * FROM EMPLOYEE WHERE ...;
END

-*Create hold file
TABLE FILE SQLOUT
PRINT *
ON TABLE HOLD AS HLD_EMP
END
-RUN

-*Create employee file
APP FI EMP_FILE DISK /temp/files/emp.txt

DEFINE FILE HLD_EMP
.....
.....
END
TABLE FILE HLD_EMP
PRINT
.....
.....
ON TABLE SAVE AS EMP_FILE FORMAT ALPHA
END
-RUN

Is converting SQLOUT to HLD_EMP file necessary? Otherwise shall I avoid hold file and use SQLOUT directly in DEFINE and PRINT sections above?
Using SQLOUT directly works for me but someone told me that the best practise is to create hold file from SQLOUT first and then use hold file for further processing.
I just would like to know which is the best way and what is the reason for it?

Thanks!
Vaidya

It depends on the query.
But holding the data in HOLD file will let you index necessary fields and may be much faster as its FOCUS format.
