Ok Guys, what am I missing here? The following returns 20141200 for 20141201, which is invalid.
-* -SET &EFFECTIVE_DATE dynamically for daily use.
-*SET TESTDATE = 20141130
SET TESTDATE = 20141201
-RUN
-TYPE *** &|YYMD = &YYMD *** &|MDYY = &MDYY ***
-SET &EFFECTIVE_DATE = DATEADD(&YYMD.EVAL,'D',-1) ;
-TYPE *** &|EFFECTIVE_DATE ...... &EFFECTIVE_DATE
Change the TESTDATE to (almost) anything else and it works.
PS: It's the same in WF7 and 8 and with or without the ".EVAL".

&YYMD is of the I8YYMD format. Before using DATEADD() you need to convert it to YYMD format using DATECVT(), i.e.

-SET &TESTDATE = 20141201;
-SET &EFFECTIVE_DATE = DATECVT(DATEADD(DATECVT(&TESTDATE, 'I8YYMD', 'YYMD'), 'D', -1), 'YYMD', 'I8YYMD');
-TYPE *** &|EFFECTIVE_DATE : &EFFECTIVE_DATE
