I have a FOC database that was created with an uploaded excel spread sheet that looks something like this:

Inventory Report Dealer 510 (510 is a Var):

Model Jul-11 Aug-11 Sep-11 Oct-11 Nov-11 Dec-11 Jan-12

Jaguar 5 6 4 5 4 5 6
Chevy 7 5 6 5 6 5 5

I want the Month/Year (ex. Jul-11) column/field name to be an &Amper varible so the user can just
view a month or a quarter or a single year at a time for all models.

I am pretty sure I can use the first 3 characters to build a month dropdown and the last 2 to build a year dropdown and chain them together. I have done this numerous times with row data but never for a column name.

I want the Month/Year (ex. Jul-11) column/field name to be an &Amper varible so the user can just
view a month or a quarter at a time for all models.

Maybe DEFINE the selected Month and Year as MONTH_YR_SELECTED ?

Then use it in the report instead of the static field names like below.

TABLE FILE INVENTORY
PRINT
     INVENTORY.MODEL
     INVENTORY.OCT_12 AS Oct-12
     INVENTORY.NOV_12 AS Nov-12
     INVENTORY.DEC_12 AS Dec-12
END

ACROSS will do the trick.

Based on the user's activity-period selection, compute the period's endpoint year-month values (in dialog manager, as &yym1 and &yym2), and use

...
sum some_measure
across yym as ''
where yym from &yym1 to &yym2;
...

I selected all the date columns in the report painter and hit the ACROSS button.

Now running the report says

"FOC007) THE REQUEST STATEMENT DOES NOT CONTAIN A VERB"

What do you mean by "I selected all the date columns in the report painter and hit the ACROSS button.?

I thought you had one date field, and the user's selection would be a choice of a single month, or quarter's worth of months, or year's worth.

In any event, can you post an ECHO of the fex when it executed? (But leave out the STYLE * section)

I see what I did wrong. When I was building the report I put in the columns for 3 months as placeholders so I could do some computes on them to show increases in decreases from month to month.

Also I am required by the client I am working with to only use the GUI so it will be easier to maintain when I leave.

Let me try to simply what I am trying to do.

It pretty easy to use a data in a row or column as a &Amper variable. I am trying to use the column itself as the &Amper.

My data base has 36 columns/fields named Jan-11 to Dec-13. I am trying to get a drop down menu with these 36 column names in it so the uses can choose the month they want to see.

Greg,

You want to create a list box with column names.
In order to retrieve the column names you could use the SYSCOLUM table provide by WebFOCUS. Something like:

TABLE FILE SYSCOLUM
PRINT NAME
WHERE TBNAME EQ 'the name of your table'
-* ANY FIRST 3 LETTERS, A DASH, ANY 2 MORE LETTERS
WHERE NAME LIKE '___-__'
END

Load the names into your listbox.
