I'm trying to use the TABLEF feature from the Report Painter GUI, but the "sorted data" checkbox is ghosted, regardless of the data file loaded in the report and sorted by the keyfield.

Does anyone know what's going on?

TABLEF does not sort, therefore sorted data is not an option. By statements used with TABLEF are for control breaks only (subtotals and print functions)

Aha! I'm following the eGuide for Report Painter 2 w/o access to the pre-made procedure files, so I've been creating them on my own, in this case orderno1.fex (for Creating Data Categories > Accelerating Data Retrieval - TABLEF). Your comments encouraged me to change TABLE FILE... to TABLEF FILE... in the script, which when run caused a styling error.

It turns out you can leave the key field as a By field, and if you completely remove the default STYLE statement, the checkbox becomes clickable. After that I was able to turn styling back on and TABLEF still works, which makes me wonder if there's a bug, or am I missing something?

Specific steps they tell us to take are, with screenshot clearly showing styling on:

-Open the orderno1.fex procedure.

-Right-click the Report component and select Open. The procedure opens in the Report Painter. The information in the report is sorted by the ORDER_NUM field.

-Select Report from the menu bar and choose Output.

-Click the checkbox for Sorted Data.

Thanks,
-Dan
