HTML Form data to Webfocus
I have been asked to select multiple entries from a HTML Dropdown.

How does Webfocus handle this any pointers or examples The Manual makes no sense to me.

What release of WebFOCUS are you running?

Are you using the HTML Layout Painter, or Resource Layout Painter depending on your release?

The multi-select information comes back to the focexec as 'value1' OR 'value2' OR 'value3'. You can put a -TYPE &var in your program at the beginning followed by a -EXIT to see exactly what you are getting back.

I applaud the fact that you at least tried to find info in the documentation.

Also look up FOC_NONE. You will need to know about that as well if you are going to use multi-select boxes.

That's bad news.....

We like it (Web Focus) it has some special characteristics, but that's why...

May be you can ask the company "you only work for" to spend some time for proper courses.

All,

When I started with webfocus, also in the same situation as WP10601, i was really upset and unhuppay with the documentation.
I then discover this forum and with all the help I got from you i could progress and my knowledge is growing day per day.

Thanks

Trying to earn my Gold status...

Just wanting to point this out... the multiselect dropdown passes the values to the fex already enclosed in quotes. a single select or any other control doesn't have the value in quotes.

Okay, so, it's not the most helpful tip... but you won't believe how many times I've stared at a fex trying to figure out why it is failing only to find out I'm missing quotes.

Majid,

We all know what you mean, and we are happy that people like yourself have grown in your knowledge and understanding of WebFOCUS. Long may it continue.

I, myself, am also disillusioned with some of the documentation and even after over twenty years of utilising FOCUS I still keep the manuals close to my working area. However, as do many of the more frequent posters on theis Forum, I contribute to some articles, profer suggestions as to improvements etc., and mostly IB listen and look at improving things but to ensure real problems get fixed we have a responsibility to raise cases and get them progressed.

For an example of improvement, take this Forum and the myriad of explanations and examples that have been provided over the years, IB has seen that there is a wealth of knowledge in the contributions here and have incorporated these posts into an enhanced search facility (which can be accessed from the top right). These supplement any documentation that exists but the end user must make the effort to use them.

As a community we are trying to help and assist those that are starting out on their journey into learning what they can achieve with WebFOCUS, just as we did a while ago (for some it is many years!!). From my point of view, I am happy to assist where I can but draw the line when an individual is not willing to meet us half way by doing some preparation and searching for themselves.

We all learn at different rates and by different methods, but I think most will agree that if you invest in your learning through time then often the lesson sticks more firmly than if no effort is given.

Remember FOC is the prefix for FOCUS errors and not always an acronym for Free Of Charge!

Just to add a little bit of extra liens to this post:
There are two ways to get multiple values from an html dropdown list.
The first one has been discussed above and concerns html screens that have been created within DevStudio with DevStudio tools. These will respect the FOC_NONE technique and also enclose values in quotes sepearated by AND or OR clauses.
The second way is how we used to do this in the old days, when there was no HTML painter around in WebFOCUS.
That way returns the variables as separate &vars, made unique by a sequence number attached to it.
Example:
Your field is called FIELD.
If you select 1 value, you get returned &FIELD.
If you select more than 1 value, you get returned:
&FIELD - contains the first value you selected
&FIELD0 - contains the total number of values selected
&FIELD1 - &FIELDxx contain the individual selected values.
Quite a nice technique, I used it a lot.
