We have a 7.7.03 server with ReportCaster configued and running. We are not currently using ReportCaster. It is configured to use a sql server db that no longer exists and thus is throwing errors when he tries to connect. I have found other posts indicating the service can be temporarily stopped. My questions are:
  • Can I permanently stop the WebFOCUSReportCaster WF77 service by stop it, then changing the Startup Type to ‘Manual’ or ‘Disabled’?
  • If the answer to 1 is yes, is ‘Manual’ or ‘Disabled’ best?
  • Will stopping the ReportCaster service impact the report/maintain server in any way?

I would stop it and set it to manual. This means that when the server is restarted, the Reportcaster service won't be automatically started. Then in the future if you decide to install the tables for RC on another DB, its just a start command on the service.

Stopping the service won't impact your reporting because ReportCaster is just a scheduling tool. Your reports wouldn't interact with it unless you had a report that would schedule a reportcaster job. I doubt maintain would be impacted either. I would say this, if you aren't having trouble with either one now, turning off RC would have no impact since you can't connect to the tables that make it work anyways.

in IIS, i set it to Disabled. i have to have it there b/c sometimes i have to add a user to an mre database, and that requires caster. go figure.
btw, windows server 2003 is being de-supported in a few days by microsoft. What are you guys doing with your 768 site? we are having to shut ours down, and we're in deep trouble. we're upping to 7706m and major diffs.
