When you say 'store' do you mean to have it as a field you can manipulate in a fex? If so, either using a define or compute to hold it will work.

DEFINE FILE ABC
FIELDA/I4 WITH realfield in ABC = &NUM_VAR;
FILEDB/A4 realfield in ABC = '&ALPHA_VAR';
END

or

TABLE FILE ABC
PRINT realfields
COMPUTE FIELDA/I4 = &NUM_VAR;
COMPUTE FILEDB/A4 = '&ALPHA_VAR';

END

TABLE FILE CAR
SUM RETAIL_COST/P13
 ON TABLE SAVE
END
-RUN
-READ SAVE &RETAIL_COST/A13

Now &RETAIL_COST can be used, passed, etc. in the next fex...

Have fun!!!

Thank you Leah. That looks backwards to me...

What you explained would store the value of the amper variable in a newly computed or defined field...correct?

I was hoping to store the value of a field that exists on an input file into a newly defined amper variable.

Any suggestions?
