I have compound report with 2 page layouts. I have added a Master Page so I can add the page numbers at the bottom of the reports. This is working fine I can see the page numbers on all the reports.

Here is my problem. After saving the master page for the first time it works. But when I edit the compound report in design mode the next time the page number item moves to some other location on the master page and I have to move it back every time.

What am I doing wrong?

Bummer... I have encountered that problem too... And learned to (unfortunately) live with it...
