How can I have a total line that counts the number of alpha fields I have of a certain type?

Example data:
+--------+-------+
|Year | Name |
---------+-------+
Freshman John
Freshman Jimmy
Freshman Stacy
Sophmore Kim
Sophmore Alan
Senior Bob

How do I make the output:

Freshman John
Freshman Jimmy
Freshman Stacy
Total Freshman: 3
Sophmore Kim
Sophmore Alan
Total Sophmore: 2
Senior Bob
Total Senior: 1

TABLE FILE YEARS
PRINT NAME
BY YEAR
ON YEAR TOTAL
END

Probably the most important part of this request is that it can't have any additional collumns that show up on the report. I've gotten around this before by doing a counter and resetting it at the next change of academic level but it adds an additional column to the report. I've looked into RECAP and TOTAL but I must be missing something on how to use these correctly.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

one way to do it is:

DEFINE FILE YEARS
NMCNT/I5 WITH NAME = 1 ;
END
TABLE FILE YEARS
PRINT NAME
BY YEAR
ON YEAR SUBFOOT
" TOTAL <YEAR <ST.NMCNT "
" "
END

In my previous post

Opps, I should have recapped C1 and printed the recap so as to not have a running total.

Sorry
