[CLOSED] Excel Output Error - File Format or File Extension is not Valid

We are using Excel 2013 on our desktops. When we create a report using EXL07 as an output type we receive the "File Format or File Extension is not Valid" message.

When we use EXL2K we get a message "The File Format and Extension of WFServlet.xls don't match". If you click ok you get the same "File Format or File Extension is not valid" message as EXL07. The only difference being that the EXL2K version will open when you select OK. The EXL07 error does not allow you to open the file.

We are using WF 8009 on Windows Server 2008R2.

We would like to have the Excel reports open correctly on our users desktops without any error messages. I have read all of the available forum posts but the solutions either don't work (Add SET EXCELSRVURL = '') or won't be allowed by internal security (Change the Registry to cancel extension hardening).

Are there any solutions that I'm missing?

Thanks for the assistance.

Are you able to reproduce this using CAR sample file. If so can you share the fex code. Also try running the report directly in server(from webconsole) and also try executing using WFServlet(using Client).

I get the same results when I use CAR.

TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT
CAR.COMP.CAR
CAR.CARREC.MODEL
CAR.BODY.DEALER_COST
CAR.BODY.RETAIL_COST
ON TABLE NOTOTAL
ON TABLE PCHOLD FORMAT EXL2K
END

and this won't open at all through Excel.

TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT
CAR.COMP.CAR
CAR.CARREC.MODEL
CAR.BODY.DEALER_COST
CAR.BODY.RETAIL_COST
ON TABLE NOTOTAL
ON TABLE PCHOLD FORMAT XLSX
END

I've never seen the XLSX format before. Usually, Excel 7 uses EXL07

The output failure is consistent through the client, webconsole, or self service URL.

If you save the file with ON TABLE HOLD FORMAT EXL07:
Is there anything around the binary content if you open it with a text or hex editor?

If not, can you open the file in Excel 2007 or what you have?

Can you unzip it? If you can, do the contents look valid?
You can compare the contents with the unzipped contents of a valid xlsx file if you're unsure.

Only thing that helps is changing registry to my knowing. Don't see the security threath, the message you get is a warning, the user clicks OK and it opens. With the registry change you just disable the message.

And it's a very common warning with a lot of tools that export to Excel.

Agreed.

Microsoft Support - Error opening file: "The file format differs from the format that the file name extension specifies

Other reading: WebFOCUS and Excel - several issues
