Hi,

I am trying to append two hold files using
(APPEND i.e. something like

FILEDEF TEMPRI DISK TEMPRI.FTM(APPEND

But I am getting only the data from the second hold file. Is it because the sources of both the hold files are different ?

Also I tried using MORE and I am getting the error :

(FOC957) FORMAT MISMATCH FOR THE FIELD

Please help.

Thanks !

First of all, the filedef as you've coded it has a syntax error. There should be a space in front of the left parenthesis.

Secondly, if you are going to use the same master, then the field formats have to be the same, especially the actuals. You can adjust the formats as you read the sources by doing defines or overriding the format when you 'print' the field. Make sure to include ON TABLE SET HOLDLIST PRINTONLY in the request if you do the latter.

TEMPRI.FTM(APPEND

Should be TEMPRI.FTM (APPEND
The space before the ( is important, but that might just have been a typo.

Is actually much more relevant as it indicates that the format of the columns is different in the two sources.

What will happen in this case using (APPEND is that when you create the file all the data will be in the hold file but when you read the file the records with the wrong format will be dumped.

All columns, from both sources must be identical otherwise it will not work.

Easy way to see if rows are being dumped in the final output
Is to use –SET &ECHO=ALL; set the output format to HTML and view source.

Additionally if you create your hold file as FORMAT ALPHA you can add
!TYPE holdfilename.ftm
The view source will allow you to see which column/s are at fault.
