From a FOCUS file, I need to create a comma delimited file that eliminates trailing spaces in the alpa-numeric fields. Can this be done in FOCUS?

Yes, FOCUS can do this. Use output format COM. According to my WF 5.2 documenation, character values are enclosed in double quotes and trailing blanks are removed.

the "COM" feature is not availible in the FOCUS version that I am using (7.09)

Okay-
Maybe you have to do the manipulation at the other end. I did a TABLE FILE CAR and HOLDed the output in FORMAT LOTUS, downloaded it to a txt file, loaded the text file into an EXCEL worksheet, and then changed the length of the text fields.
Col A Col B Col C Col D Col E
ENGLAND 7 10 ENGLAND 7
JAPAN 5 10 JAPAN 5
ITALY 5 10 ITALY 5
W GERMANY 9 10 W GERMANY 9
FRANCE 6 10 FRANCE 6
Col A is the text imported from FOCUS.
Col B is ARGLEN imported from FOCUS
Col C is LEN from Excel for COL A
Col D is TRIM from Excel for COL A
Col E is LEN from Excel for Col D
There are a lot of new, neat feature in the more recent releases of FOCUS.
