Hello. I'm working with InfoAssist 8.0.07.

Quick environment background: I am working in an environment where we do not have access to Developer Studio, only Info Assist for developing reports. I also do not have the ability to create views in the underlying datasource. I only have access to the master files.

After joining enough master files, I've hit an error when joining the next master file:
"Error with master file: WS_V_***tablenamehere (FOC336) THE SUM OF ALL FIELD LENGTHS EXCEEDS MAXIMUM. ......"

Once I get this error, I can no longer edit the join once i click ok on the error message window. Nothing pops up when clicking the join button. If I save the report after this, it cannot be opened with future attempts.

I'm pretty sure this is simply due to the number of tables I have to join to, and their corresponding column lengths.

My Question:

Is there a way in Info Assist, to only select a subset of the fields for a given master file?

Thanks.

Hello rgp09

Welcome to Focal Point!

In regards to your question the following describes the error message:

Any error message number can be queried using a focexec that contains the
following: ? msgnumber

The msgnumber is the numeric portion of a FOCxxx message. For example, a FOC336
error message can be queried using the following: ? 336

Here is the detailed explanation of the FOC336 message:
(FOC336) THE SUM OF ALL FIELD LENGTHS EXCEEDS MAXIMUM.
The sum of the lengths of all fields in a structure exceeds the limit. The
limit is 262,144 bytes. Reduce the number and size of the fields in the
file, or eliminate JOINs and cross-references if possible.

What is the maximum record length? FOC336 explained

As far as reducing the number of fields - you could try creating HOLD files and select just the fields required and then JOIN the HOLD files together.

Thank you for participating in the Focal Point Forum.
