Hi all,

I am creating a PDF file with images from a blob oracle field.

I have FILECOMPRESS = ON and the resulting pdf file is over 300MB with 22 images. This file size is too much!

The interesting thing is, when we open the file then do a Save As... the resulting file is only 7MB!

So, how do I create that 7MB file instead of the 300MB?

Regards,
Anatess

My guess is that its the images, and they are not being compressed.

I think only the report part of the document gets compressed with FILECOMPRESS = ON.

Have you checked to see how much space the images take ?

Yes, the images are compressed in the DB, Webfocus uncompresses it and puts it in the PDF, but doesn't compress it again when it holds it.

So, I was wondering what you guys do to save PDFs with images in its compressed form like Adobe does.

Oracle has the images stored compressed to 50%. They're mostly jpegs.

There's a FP entry for this problem here http://forums.informationbuild...1057331/m/4847082176 so I know some people have this same issue. There is also a case opened with IBI from last August that has no resolution: https://techsupport.informatio...oblems/92382507.html

So, the bloated PDF due to jpg images is a problem... I just wanted to know if any of you have a work-around...

The only thing I can think of is to get yourself a dos program that will compress an image, then attach that to the PDF.

I assume the images are JPG's ?

Hi Waz,

Yes, they're all JPGs...

The thing is, the images are stored in Oracle already compressed. So, I don't think a DOS program will help here.

Well... I guess a PDF Compressor after the file is already created can be used. But, we don't have such a software in house that I know of. Grrr.

Regards,
Anatess.

Now I am at a loss,

You say that the images are compressed in Oracle, but are not when you extract them ?

That's exactly right.

It is compressed in Oracle and Webfocus uncompresses it to put in the PDF and holds it uncompressed.

You can try it in your installation and see if it occurs there too. I'm on 7.7.03.

I'm not sure if you can see our Cases. I opened this case last weekend: https://techsupport.informatio...ry.jsp?case=11713007 and IBI is consulting with Product Management to address the issue on, possibly, an NFR to compress images. Unfortunately, I can't wait too long for a solution from IBI without providing at least a workaround.

I'm kinda scratching my head, though, wondering why there's not much buzz about this issue on Focal Point. It's making me second-guess myself...

Anatess

I am intrigued now.

I will give it a go, when I have a chance.

I went ahead and swiped some java code to compress images in a PDF file using java's iText Module.

So, the PDF hold file is created and then we call the java class to compress the held file. It's not pretty but it serves our purposes for the meantime.

The nice thing is that the capability is there to post process the PDF documents.

We do similar things here.
