Hi,

I have a function that I wrote and want to assign a date field that is passed to the function to an amper variable. I can't seem to figure this out.

The passed field is "DATEORD" in YYMD format and I tried converting it to alpha string and then assigning it like this:

DTASSIGN/A8YYMD = DATEORD;
&DT = DTASSIGN;

This doesn't work. I also tried many other ways as well - all to no avail. Can this be done at all? I am assigning the field to the amper to then call some external code which will move the date forward or backward in time.

Thanks,

Norb

The only way to get a field value into an &variable is to hold it and then use a -READ. In order to set an &var value you have to use a -SET (or -DEFAULT) so you have to use Dialogue Manager. DM commands are completely independent of database operations so there is no relationship to any field values. You can define a field value using an &var, but not the other way around (without a -READ.)

Thanks Darin. That's what I needed to know. Bummer.

Thanks for pointing out the "-SET" also. I had that in my code but was so frustrated I must have forgot to include it in the post.
