What do you mean by length ?
Number of fields ?
Size of the file ?
Size of the record ?

Is this using ON TABLE HOLD FORMAT FOCUS?
If so, an upgrade to 7.6.2 will give respite, or try and get multiple segment structure using multi-verb requests.
FOCUS files have a maximum segment length of 3962, XFOCUS 16256 (I think).
If it is not a HOLD, just split the segment with unique segments.

If it is a focus database the max size is about 2 gig
