Is there a way when you create an excel workbook within webfocus to protect it so end users can't alter the workbook in any manner? I only found one post on this and it was in 2004 and had no responses.

I saw it listed in the New Feature Document for version 7.6.5, but I don't have that version, so I don't know how well it works.

(Prod: WebFOCUS 7.7.03: Win 2008 & AIX hub/Servlet Mode; sub: AS/400 JDE; mostly Self Serve; DBs: Oracle, JDE, SQLServer; various output formats)

Unfortunately it does not allow you to set a password.

The only way to do it is to apply the protection using a macro.
You also need to protect the macro otherwise the users will be able to see the password you have used.

Since you can use Excel templates, I would suggest creating a template that protects the worksheet with an OnOpen macro as JG suggests. If you'd never need to change the spreadsheet yourself, you might get around the password issue JG alludes to by having a random string generated in the macro and set that as the PW.

This process is going to be run batch and emailed to end users, templates only work with 'pchold' so templates won't work.

Not true, they work with HOLD as well. Of course they get stored on a network drive somewhere, but you can FILEDEF that.

I then use CDONTS within VBScript to email out the files. I firstly open the files (within the VBS) and then save them as pukka xls files to reduce the file size before sending. I have posted sample code before - here
