The MRE applet for v7.7.03 worked on IE8. I stupidly upgraded to IE9. It no longer worked. The Java logo and spinning wheel appears after logging in, but nothing happens. I tried in Chrome. It worked so I was happy again. After a few days it stopped working in Chrome 20. I downgraded IE9 to IE8 in the hopes that I would get it to work in IE8 - no luck. I tried Firefox 13 and 3 - no luck - compatibility issues with the Java version. I tried with Opera 12 - no luck.

The Java version is 1.6.0_23, which is probably an antique. I was warned to never heed the Java upgrade pop-up - "do not upgrade Java to a version beyond what Dev Studio requires".

The situation is that the MRE Java applet stopped working and that something is making my laptop fans spin like mad - something that does not show up in the Task Manager , other than java.exe running at 3%-7%

Help!

Hello Francis,
Are you using IE 64 bit or 32 bit?
By default, when you upgrade, IE comes with 64 bit version browser.
I noticed that if you run with 64 bit IE, nothing comes up.
May be that is the cause for your issue too.

I am using IE 8 32bit, though I have both options.

We had something similar though ours would come partially up. As we had a number of machines we matched Java Versions. Found one that was working and loaded that back on the problem machines. I know that there were 2 different versions of java in our environment that gave us difficulties. I remember the one version was 1.6.19 but I can't remember the other. I have 1.6.17 and can access our 7.6.11,& 7.7.03 mr applet. So you may want to try either a higher or lower java version.

Uninstall all versions of Java that you have (JRE and JDK). Then do a fresh install of latest version of JDK 6 jdk-6u32-windows-i586.exe.
Also, create all the Java environment variables
JAVA_HOME - C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_32
JDK_HOME - C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_32
JRE_HOME - C:\Program Files\Java\jre6

Also, don't upgrade to JDK 7. Disable java update in msconfig and in the Control Panel Java configuration tool.

Maybe Mighty Max's suggestion of uninstalling all older versions may help.

Or, using the Java Control Panel, only enable the 1.6 version:
