Having just returned from Summit. I was sitting in the session called meet the FocWizzards taught by Noreen and Art and I was wondering how many of us have been around since the the early days. Hey I think the first release of FOCUS I used was 4.9.12 and I remember taking my PC apart to install the expansion card to get PCFOCUS release 0.5 to install. Maybe we should have a Quarter Century Club or something like that. To honor the persons that have spent the lions share of there careers using and promting FOCUS / WebFOCUS.

I agree!
I started with FOCUS in 1982.
Mainframe MVS and VM.
Then PC/FOCUS, VAX/FOCUS.
Then Focus for Windows.
Focus for Unix
And back to the future: WebFOCUS.

We did in fact posit that very thing to Gerry at the offsite, he liked the idea, and we discussed it with Kathleen.

I just voted Yes - I'm with (Web)Focus since '88, so I just barely qualify for the quarter century club.

Hmmm ... I go back to '85. My most prized posessions (OK, maybe prized is the wrong word ...) are my 3-volume set of PC-FOCUS manuals - including UWS. At Summit (apart from Noreen and Art's presentation), almost all the demonstrations were done using the GUI, which drove me nuts ....

Voted yes.

Started in 1987 (guess that means I'd just sneak into the 1/4 century club this year!), writing FOCUS extracts and reports against MSA (Management Science America) General Ledger/Profitability files on MVS.

Thanks all!

Great Idea!

I started using the beta version of VaxFocus in 1985 here in Dallas. We sure had fun helping IBI debug it! Thank god IBI had a great local support team. We used the IBM Mainframe manual. Note the singular use of 'manual'. Just one volume! I wish I still had it. There was no Vax manual as it hadn't been written, yet.

Jimster06 (now retired): Yes, huge points for TED!

Waz: so true. I still have (and occaisionally use) a Focus VAX/VMS Subroutine Library Users Manual (DN4100027.1188). A set of OpenVMS manuals from 1993 and a near complete set of Focus System Journals, too.

George Patton: If you hate the GUI now under WebFocus, what did you think about the first GUI attempts using Tabletalk/Modifytalk?

This makes me think of the ELO song 'Ticket to the Moon'. The first verse is appropo:

Remember the good old 1980s?
When things were so uncomplicated?
I wish I could go back there again
And everything could be the same.

With the "Dallas" premier tonight on TNT, everything old is new again! Cheers!

David

I started in 1983 with pc focus, not sure what version it was, but i remember a bunch of floppies and one with a red dot.

In fact my first experience with pc, databases etc and I became addicted.
Reading the manual (the silver colored one) in my backyard. My wife asking me what book it was.

I have to admit that I used to use TABLETALK to build a skeleton fex, then enhance using TED.

I wish TED was still around, so powerful. Never learned all the commands.

I think I'll have a little cry.

In ’83 I got tricked into learning FOCUS. I was an assembler programmer working with communication between computers. I was asked to join a team, because I knew how to get the new 1200 baud modems to connect. After I settled in, my boss’s, boss’s , boss’s walked up to me and said you should learn something called FOCUS, I signed you for an on-line course. This course was taken on a green screen dumb terminal. I listened to the guy; after all he was three levels up the command structure and had a big corner office. As they say the rest is history.

Its quite interestig how people get into there careers.

In 83, I was a trainee technician, and there were too many of us. We were playing cricket in the hallways, nothing to do.

I was offered a chance to do some programming, as it was covered in the course I had done (Not FOCUS though).

And now well over half my life has been dedicated to FOCUS.

Thanks Gerry.
Good One

I've been trying to resist this thread, but what the ****.

1984, but are we also counting RAMIS, because then I get an extra year and a half.

First task in FOCUS was for one of the UK's first customers to convert RAMIS to FOCUS on an IBM 3070.

Z/OS, MVS, CMS, OS400, VAX, TANDEM, UNIX, LINUX, OS2, Windows, DOS.

liked the VAX, lots of VAX specific functions.

Christ I'm getting old.
