Hi,

This is my first post, so apologies if I get it all wrong. ^^
I am in the process of migrating reports from an old version of webfocus to a new one (vs 4 to vs 7).
I have come across a report that has the following code:

USE
D:\IBI\file.txt AS TESTFILE
END

FILEDEF TESTFILE DISK D:\IBI\file.txt

DEFINE FILE TESTFILE
..blah blah
END

TABLE FILE CNHEXT
PRINT
and it goes on...

Since I did not write this code and do not know who did, I am clueless as to why this USE statement is not working - and why it is there in the first place. I have searched, but cannot find any reference to it being used in this way.

Any help/explanation would be great!

Ditch the USE - the FILEDEF will be enough. USE is meant only for FOCUS or XFOCUS files.

Can you view the file.txt referenced. I've never seen the structure, but I wonder if it was just another way of pointing to the file. What happens if you comment out thte code?

the USE syntax is for focus files only.
you'll want to FILEDEF for a text file
FILEDEF TESTFILE DISK D:\IBI\file.txt
is already in your code and should do the job for you.
The USE statement as you have it should be producing an error, just comment it out, or nuke it.

I guess that the different file name was a typo or is TESTFILE accessed later on?

Oops, the CNHEXT was a mistake on my part.
I did try and comment the USE out as suggested. The report runs perfectly, odd how it worked fine on the old version and not on the new.

Ah, the wonderful world of 'it was wrong and now we fixed it'. IBI calls that 'tightening of the code'. Seems every release does it. Something that really shouldn't have worked did or release notes missed. Also, you will find features no longer supported.

Welcome to the world of WebFOCUS. A wonderful tool, but it can drive you crazy sometimes. Idea
