Is there a clever way to determine the number of months elapsed where I have two columns of type integer as follows

Column A) 200706
Column B) 200901

The result should be 17 months elapsed.

(I can do it but takes me a few defines to get my result!)

Try the DATEDIF function - you can ask for # of days, months, years, etc. Details in the documentation. Make your integer columns I6YYM as a starter

Just convert to newdates and subtract.

DEFINE FILE CAR
MYA/I6YYM WITH COUNTRY = 200706 ;
MYB/I6YYM WITH COUNTRY = 200901 ;
MYDA/YYM = MYA ;
MYDB/YYM = MYB ;
DIFF/I4 = MYDA - MYDB ;
END
TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT MYA MYB MYDA MYDB DIFF
IF RECORDLIMIT EQ 1
END
-RUN
