Using EXL2K to get my Excel format report but some of the user may have Excel97 on their system. When they are trying to view the report, some of the number field shows as 1.23E+9 for the number 123456789.
Is there any way we can avoid that?

There is absolutely no way to know what version of excel a client is running unless they tell you.
If you offer them a choice of formats and they pick the wrong one then that's user education.
