I tried to get the ftp instructions to work using raw ftp which I assume will be quicker than the web link which downloads via http.

The userid given ending in @ibi.com did not work and I had to use the ibi/userid embedded in the URL which did allow me to logon.

However as soon as I try to do anything on the server I get "Connection closed by remote host".

1. Is raw ftp download worth the extra effort
over http
2. Does anyone know why the remote host is always closing the connection?

As always any answers appreciated or should that be AAAAA in webspeak?

Regards

John

You might have security restrictions on your box. Can you download from other sites via ftp? Did you add ibi on your trusted network?

Thanks,
Sayed

Thanks for your answer - I did have restrictions on FTP but the systems admin now says they have been removed. They used to stop me from connecting to the site altogether.

Susannah

Once again - thanks. My FTP client is the command line affair that comes with windows. Do you have a freeware alternative?

TonyA has pointed me at ftp explorer which works provided you use the ibi\ version of the password!

It seems its worth the wait to go ftp vs http since there is less encapsulation but no figures seem to abound.

If anyone else is interested in the link that I sent to John, you can try FTP Explorer free (15 day trial Frowner) from http://www.ftpx.com.

I've been using a version from June 1997 on many different Windows versions from 98 through to XP, without problem. I have not tried the newer version so it could be quite different (617 Kb to 1020 Kb), let me know if you use it and what you think.

Put it in your arsenal today!!

John

For FTP up and download I use several things.

Many years I used "total commander" http://www.ghisler.com/ this is shareware, we bought it in our company.
At home I use firefox and an add-on fire-ftp.

Both programs work fine, but are not suited for programed ftp sessions.
When I need that I use to create a script in a dos command box.
