my graph splits in two and the values are all messed up.

I tried this

DEFINE FILE GGSALES
DATUM/YYMD=DATE;
MAAND/tM=DATUM;
END
GRAPH FILE GGSALES
SUM DOLLARS
ACROSS MAAND AS ''
COLUMNS FEB AND MAY AND JAN AND DEC
ON GRAPH SET LOOKGRAPH VBAR // or ON GRAPH SET LOOKGRAPH VLINE
ON GRAPH SET GRAPHEDIT SERVER
ON GRAPH SET BARNUMB OFF
ON GRAPH SET 3D OFF
ON GRAPH SET VZERO ON
ON GRAPH SET GRID ON
ON GRAPH PCHOLD FORMAT PNG
ON GRAPH SET GRAPHSTYLE *
END

and got a barchart (or a line) with the 4 months as wanted.

what is the format of your fields?? (the across)

If I do the following:
GRAPH FILE CAR
SUM SEATS
ACROSS COUNTRY
END

I get a nice graph. The same is valid when I change the ACROSS in a BY. But when I add a second sort field it has to be sorted different from the first one to result in a graph that reflects the request. And, I have to specify ON GRAPH SET GRMERGE ON, otherwise I get as much graphs as there are distinct sort values.
So the following is what you need (I guess):
GRAPH FILE CAR
SUM SEATS
BY COUNTRY
ACROSS CAR
ON GRAPH SET GRMERGE ON
END
