Before installing the SSAS 2008 R2 adapter my SQL Server 2008 R2 connection worked fine.
Reporting Server 8.0.06 loses access to SSAS cubes

Now, I'm getting the following error:

(FOC1400) SQLCODE IS 18456 (HEX: 00004818) XOPEN: 42000
: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server: [42000] Login failed for user
: 'ADS\machine-name$'.
(FOC1405) SQL PREPARE ERROR.

I also found out that when I start the report server with security off, I could connect to the DB.

I'm using report server trusted security with WFRS. I followed instructions on the WebFocus security and administration.

Any suggestions?

We have ours set to 'EXPLICIT' on the Adpater using a common User/Pass which is entered below. That User is also setup in MSSQL Server Security. In Access Control (WFRS), we have trust_ext = 'y' and trust_nt = 'n'.

If I understand correctly, you have 'Trusted/Pass' on the Client Server and 'Trusted' on the WFRS MSSQL Adpater? When you Test this Adapter connection, you receive the error you noted?

Yes exactly, I have trusted/pass on the Client Server and trusted on the WFRS SQL Adapter.

The problem is that either selection Trusted/Pass thru/Explicit - getting the same error.

With Trusted I get login failed for user (machine name)
With pass thru/explicit I get login failed for my user ID.
