You can, but you have to be careful.
I can think of two options.
1. Delete and load the new records into the FOCUS file
2. HOLD as different name and use the USE command to point your master to the generated FOCUS file. This may not work , depending on the changes you have done to the master.
You may also be able to add the extra lines of master file under program control as well.

Alternatively use APP HOLDMETA to an app folder lower down in your PATH, so that your new synonym is created lower down in the path so that the synonym you want to be used is the first found.
Just be very careful that the synonym is compatible!!

I assume you are creating the Focus file via HOLD FORMAT FOCUS -- which will indeed replace the .mas file along with the .foc file -- and you have added information into the .mas file (joins, defines, titles, whatever) that you wish to preserve across such refreshes.
You can either [1] save the enhanced .mas under another name (an "alternate master file") , and use USE to point to the focus file [ that's essentially WAZ's second approach ]; or, [2] create a Business View synonym that points to the HOLD file.
The former operates without looking at the .mas that the HOLD refreshes, and so will likely break if you make any change to your TABLE HOLD request. The latter operates through the underlying file's .mas, so it can survive some such changes.
Either solution is keeps all the filenames distinct, as opposed to Tony's suggestion.

Jack,
I think the Business View synonym is a great idea.

Have you tried to open the .mas file in edit mode, run the refresh, and then do a save on the .mas file that is open?

Why not use the Modify syntax?
You can use the CREATE command to truncate the table, and then load it all using modify. This way your never changing your master and you don't need to use tricks.
