I get this message when i try to add or update using a maintain form

there are no use statements in the code and the database that is being referenced is in the edasprof.prf

0(FOC395) CANNOT WRITE TO A FILE WHOSE 'USE' COMMAND REQUESTS 'READ'
If a file is specified as 'READ' in a USE command, a MODIFY
procedure may not attempt to INCLUDE, UPDATE or DELETE data.

i have not posted before so if my signature does not show up properly we are using webfocus 7.6.4 on windows

we are converting from 5.3.3 on unix and did not run into this error there.

i don't know where to start trouble shooting this. has anyone run into this?
i searched this forum and used advance search and didn't come up with anything.

thanks, trish

Trish,

You did not tell us what type of database you're trying to access. It may be different for focus db than for relational tables.

Check the master file of the table you want to run the maintain against.
Specifically check if it contains a FIELDTYPE=R for the keyfield(s).
If so, remove the keyword.
This keyword means that the indicated field is read-only and might cause the mentioned error.

Also, check the access file if it exists. It may be that it still contains the WRITE= keyword. If this is the case, remove it.
