I need to set a default value for a parameter in adhoc.

Basically i need to filter the nulls from the user input.

Hi,

Do you write the Adhoc program code?
If so, you just write it at the top of your program.
I do all my programs in code (Adhoc as well), so I don't know how it's done with the interface.

If you are just typing something in, it should look like this:
-DEFAULTS &COUNTRY='JAPAN'
TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT SALES DEALER_COST RETAIL_COST
BY COUNTRY
BY CAR
BY MODEL
WHERE COUNTRY EQ '&COUNTRY'
END

This won't prompt though.

When you say adhoc, are you talking about the auto-prompt screen? If yes, and you need to do something fancy with what the user enters, then I suggest that you do away with the default and parse the input. I'd also recommend a custom launch page.
