I don't have report assistant up at the moment, but if you are just wanting a simple count based on the 'BY' phrase(s) on the selected data, you 'SUM' the field, then under field options you can set the 'SUM' to a count of the field.

Would you upgrade your signature so we know your version and applications.
Some training might help, since this is very basic.

TABLE FILE CAR
SUM CNT.MODEL
BY COUNTRY
END

WOOHOO!

That's what I came up with too. But I didn't post it because I thought I must have misunderstood what was wanted.

Training is not necessary for this code.....just crack open the manuals.

In Report Painter, right-click on the field you want to count (must be a SUM field) and click on Options... choose the General tab and click on the Prefix drop-down box. CNT should be one of the things you can pick among others.

I suppose the question is really, are you doing this under MRE where Report Assistant is used, or Developer Studio using Report Painter. Giving a code example does not answer the original question, probably should have asked the above before I did my answer. Some users of the tool can't do code, they may be limited to reporting objects under MRE. Groannnnnn.

LOL

Don't get me wrong. GUI is greate as long as the query you want to write is simple. Anything more complicated and it doesn't work.

I out grew GUI before I even knew it existed.
