Is there a way I can color the background of each row by a sort item.

Say for example I have a report similar to:

TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT
'CAR.COMP.CAR'
'CAR.BODY.SALES'
'CAR.CARREC.MODEL'
BY 'CAR.ORIGIN.COUNTRY'
END

I would like the rows to be alternating gray/white but instead of by row I would like it to be by each country.

So in this case every row for country England would be gray, every row for France would be white, every row for Italy would be gray, ect.

Nevermind, I figured it out. Just set every other by field to 1 or 0 and used conditional styling to gray out the fields that EQ 1.

Hi Eric,

I think it might be easier to just add a line to the styling section of your report. Insert the following line and you are done. No muss, no fuss.

TYPE=DATA, BACKCOLOR=(BY=COUNTRY SILVER WHITE), $

Change the COUNTRY field to whatever your BY field is.

that is a cool new feature, isn't it.
thanks for reminding us all.
I do admit to doing it exactly the way .eric does it...so that i can change color after every group of 10, say.

Norb, good answer.
0 or 1 my way of doing it , but either of the following 2 lines would work depending on what exactly you want to alternate. 1st line by the group of car, the second would be just the sort field (column n1) by itself.

-* TYPE=DATA, BACKCOLOR=(BY=COUNTRY SILVER WHITE), $
-* TYPE=DATA, COLUMN=N1, BACKCOLOR='SILVER', $
