I need to save the hold to disk and create the mfd
so that the file can be reported against with other
queries. This should be easy but I can't get this to work!!

FILEDEF CarHold DISK E:\APPS\TEMPFILES\CarHold.TXT;
APP HOLD TEMPFILES

TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT CAR
BY COUNTRY
ON TABLE HOLD AS CarHold FORMAT ALPHA
END

When you say you can't get it to work, what doesn't work?

The APP HOLD TEMPFILES should force the master and the hold file to the TEMPFILES directory.

Does E:\APPS\TEMPFILES exist ?

Where is the fex running, is it on your PC or on a server?

Hi,
just to be sure, do you have -RUN after the FILEDEF and before the TABLE request?

kind regards,
Markus

You see the file because of the FILEDEF but not the master because TEMPFILES is not in your APP PATH.

The problem with using APP HOLD is it will also save any other work files to that location, not a good idea.

1. There should not be a ; at the end of the FILEDEF
2. When you do issue an APPHOLD the FILEDEF is not needed
3. For APPHOLD to work TEMPFILES must be part of your application path
(if not issue APP APPENDPATH TEMPFILES - probabley the reason you do not see the master)
4. A better way to do it would be

TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT CAR
BY COUNTRY
ON TABLE HOLD AS TEMPFILES/CarHold FORMAT FOCUS
END

Use FORMAT FOCUS and you do not need to issue a FILEDEF to use the file later.
(Assuming TEMPFILES is in your APP PATH

tempfiles is in the app path.
i did remove the ; at the end of the filedef.
there is a -RUN after the filedef.
i do need the format as alpha and not a focus db.
the fex is running from a server.
CarHold.ftm is making it to TEMPFILES, not the MFD.
i ended up hardcoding a mfd for the CarHold.ftm - primitive but it's working.

thanks for everyones help.

FILEDEF CarHold DISK E:\Wesco\TEMPFILES\CarHold.ftm
APP HOLD TEMPFILES

-RUN

TABLE FILE CAR
PRINT CAR
BY COUNTRY
ON TABLE HOLD AS TEMPFILES FORMAT ALPHA
END

Amazing this post is still active after almost two weeks - it's WebFOCUS 001.

Hard to believe this does not work:

APP HOLDMETA BASEAPP
-*APP HOLDDATA BASEAPP

TABLE FILE CAR
SUM SALES
BY COUNTRY
ON TABLE HOLD AS HCAR01 FORMAT ALPHA
END
(HOLDMETA for metadata, HOLDDATA for data)
