[WORKAROUND] Unable to install App Studio 8.0.0.7 - Not enough disk space

I'm trying to install a fresh install of App Studio 8.0.0.7. Very early in the install process I get an error : "There is not enough space on drive C:\ to extract this package."

There are some old posts which pertain to this issue, but they are approximately 3 years old now. It's possible (probable?) that the root of the problem is the same, but seeing that the newest posts (that I was able to find) were that old it seems like it's possible that something in the installer reverted back causing an old problem in the new package.

The two older posts mention a couple of workarounds that I have not attempted yet :

(OP 5-28-2010) [WORKED AROUND] Dev Studio 7.6.11 Install (Not enough space on C Drive)
(OP 5-19-2011) [WORKED AROUND - NOT SOLVED]Dev Studio install - "Not enough room on Drive C" message

I will attempt these work-arounds, but wanted to bring this back to everyone's attention.

Should I create a ticket for this, even if the work-arounds solve the problem?

The self extracting ZIP file needs a lot of free space for it, the extracted files and the installed product. This error results if there is not enough free space for all of that. You can extract first and then install and that would require less.

Theoretically that's the cause.

If you guys figured out how to compress a 750 gig file down to 1.2 Gigs then you're in the wrong business! You should be patenting that and making cash hand over fist.

There was plenty of room (750 gigs) so that wasn't the problem.

I solved the issue by downloading WinZip and extracting all of the files out of the executable.

Once the .exe had been extracted I ran 'Setup' and it installed just fine.

This seems to be very similar to the issues people were experiencing in the old posts that I linked in my OP.

This is the first computer in my enterprise that's had a hard time installing from the .exe, so I'm not sure what the deal with that particular computer is. I've successfully installed on other machines previously. Regardless, it's working now!

That sounds suspiciously like the free space calculation code got out of bounds on that 750GB number and wrapped to a negative number.

Perhaps this is a 32-bit system or a 32-bit installer?
I suspect it's the installer.

If that's the case, you should be able to fool it by creating a very large file so that less disk space is available :P

This appears to occur for every release of WebFOCUS since 7.6. It is a little odd that a technical person from IBI is not aware of the issue.

The following work-around worked for me, which was mentioned for some of the previous issues of the same type on older versions :

I downloaded WinZip and extracted all of the files from the executable (.EXE) zip file into a folder, making sure to preserve the directory structure (I can't remember if there was one, but I make it a habit to always do this ).

I then ran the setup.exe file from the executable .ZIP, which allowed me to complete the installation.

Please note, the limitation / error was not caused by low hard-disk space as there was a ton of available space. I guess there is a possibility that it's due to File Allocation differences between a 32 and 64 bit setup (OS is 64 bit, executable/installer might be 32), but I didn't investigate this any further.

This issue has been around for quite a while and it should be up to Information Builders to resolve.

Cheers, thanks a lot.
