In the past, leveraging the cloud for mission-critical business applications was a risky proposition. However, as cloud providers have matured, concerns about security and a lack of needed services have dissipated. Today, even large enterprises are taking advantage of cloud solutions.

It has long been clear the cloud is well suited for short-term, pilot, or proof-of-concept application development. Today however, enterprises also see it as a good business decision for increasingly mission-critical uses. As aging IT infrastructure components such as servers need to be replaced, it often makes sense to replace them with a hosted infrastructure. As the requirements of business units demand faster time to market, the cloud is often the only cost-effective way to achieve project goals.
