As documented in Web Browser Support for WebFOCUS:

Don't any customers think it's about time that this hard-coded "feature" of Developer Studio be opened up?

I guess I fail to understand why Dev Studio ignores my browser preferences.

I'm aware that the documentation states that DS will always use IE, but I've never seen an explanation as to why it can't or shouldn't be unbundled from this hard-coded state.

Firefox has deep penetration in the higher education sector. Information Builders would be wise to recognize the need for better Firefox support.

Agreed. In fact it should be browser independent. Internet Explorer is no longer the standard. It seems like lazy programming to rely on Internet Explorer for aspects of a development tool.

There's something to be said for standardization. But as 'Unix-y' as the directory structure is on the server/client it is sort of funny to have it so IE-ified.

And about that Linux port of Dev Studio...

I too would like browser configurability in DevStudio.

I get around too a degree by launch page that uses servlet (or in my emails). However, Outlook 2007 has a quirk -- see my post here:

At least you would like IB to recognise which is the default browser. It would be some much better having a tool which conforms to W3C standards, which you cannot say about IE. Besides, IE is no longer the most used browser. If looking at stats from w3schools.com regarding browser usage you can see that IE has dropped from 29,7 % to 21,7 % since October 2010, while FF has gone from 44,1 % to 38,7 %. The winner in this race is Chrome, increasing their share of the market from 19,2 % to 32,3 % in October. So, why is IB writing code for 20 % and not for 70 % of the users?

I know, probably the majority of the visitors on w3schools.com are not business users, rather techies, but it would be so much easier being a developer if IB would stop marrying one single vendorl Remember the marriage with IBM and PC/Focus for OS/2?

Devstudio needs to control the browser through windows api calls. That can’t be done with any other browser. Using other browsers would mean being prompted for credentials every time you run something and we don't believe that experience would be good. Additionally, the Composer tools require IE for design time.
