Developers Studio, If you do not want to use that then there is no Recommended alternative.

Personally I would suggest Ultra Edit to which
you can add Boogarweed's WebFocus extensions.

and then there's TextPad, which i personally prefer. www.textpad.com
Ultra edit has a nice feature, it can make an edit across all files in a specified directory.
Dangerous feature, but nice. Textpad can't do that. So i use Textpad routinely, and UltraEdit when i have something tricky to do.
Ultraedit is also a Hex editor.
They're neither one free, but they're very cheap.

One NB about UltraEdit...when you install it, it insidiously inserts itself as the default way to look at right-click-view-source on any webpage...and I can't figure out how to unwind that. There are times when the view-source results in a hex view...maddening. so ..caveat emptor.

We at Westcon use EditPad. It has a 'classic' low featured version that's free, and a more powerful 'pay' version. It offers tabbed editing of multiple files (I've had over 80 open at once) and can search/find/replace across all the currently open files. A nice feature is that every new search can begin at the top of the file.

We have Textpad which works quite well.

I've used NoteTab (freeware version) during the Y2K remediation days - can apply changes across multiple docs - also has macro functioning which made code changes a breeze.

Oh, to get those Y2K rates again... Wink

I'm having some trouble with the run button. I noticed a different version of the Ultra Edit software but I keep getting "Error Opening file for write... The system cannot find the path specified"

I've simplified the paths to as basic as possible (no spaces in the path etc) and still get the same error... any suggestions?

The coloring is very helpful and way better than the standard black/white of MRE.
