Once PDF Layout designer spits out the code Joe Schmo has to maintain it.

eg

SET HTMLARCHIVE=ON
COMPOUND LAYOUT PCHOLD FORMAT PDF
UNITS=IN, $
SECTION=section1, LAYOUT=ON,
METADATA='0.9^0.5^0.5^0.5', MERGE=OFF, ORIENTATION=PORTRAIT, PAGESIZE=A4, $
PAGELAYOUT=1, NAME='Page layout 1', text='Page layout 1', TOC-LEVEL=1, BOTTOMMARGIN=0.5, TOPMARGIN=0.5,

COMPONENT='report3', TEXT='report3', TOC-LEVEL=2, POSITION=(0.836 2.808), DIMENSION=(7.083 2.184),
METADATA='Z-INDEX: 100; LEFT: 0.836in; OVERFLOW: auto; WIDTH: 7.083in; POSITION: absolute; TOP: 2.808in; HEIGHT: 2.184in', $

Try as I might I cannot find docs on this. Are the docs team going to produce something at some point or does someone know of an obscure journal where the author of this product downloaded his head at some point...

I searched for
quote:
COMPOUND LAYOUT
in the Technical Documentation Library and got this document: Creating a Compound Layout Report With Syntax I think this is what you (and I) are looking for.

Wow-
I had openned a NFR last year and fought with them for weeks trying to get doc on this. You'd think they would have informed me when it became available!

Here's some stuff on HTMLARCHIVE but there is not an explanation in the docs as to how it relates to PDF.

http://documentation.informationbuilders.com/masterinde.../source/topic167.htm

One thing not covered was the Metadata Tag - here's my take if others could add any knowledge to this it would be good.

OBJECT=STRING, NAME='text6', TEXT='<font face="ARIAL" size=10><b><u>By Contractor</u></b></font>', POSITION=(0.832 5.518), MARKUP=ON, WRAP=ON, DIMENSION=(7.083 0.208),
METADATA=' OUTERHTML: <SPAN id=text6 style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; Z-INDEX: 100; LEFT: 0.832in; WIDTH: 7.083in; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; POSITION: absolute; TOP: 5.518in; HEIGHT: 0.208in" tabIndex=8><DIV><SPAN style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold"><SPAN style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline">By Contractor</SPAN></SPAN></DIV></SPAN>', $

This seems to be a HTML version of info contained in other tags.

Is it essential for PDF output or it there for DHTML use?

In addition the documentation neglects to say that you can imbed font info into the text.

A listing of the permissible syntax would be great.

Thanks Rick

This seems to be an addendum to Chapter 8 "Creating Reports with the Document Composer".

It turns out that PDF Layout Painter is now renamed Document Composer and this is used for Active HTML and Powerpoint presentations as well as PDF.

Thus I would suggest that the METADATA information that Doc Composer inserts is for AHTML and Powerpoint.

It looks as though Doc Composer is going to be an increasingly important part of wf.
