We've recently installed WF 8.0.06 in our Dev environment.

In my daily work, I frequently need to compare focexecs, to check for differences between them.

How do I compare files in WF 8, when I do not see basedir?

In WF 8 I don't see basedir here: \\servername\ibi_parent\WebFOCUS80

In WF 7 I see basedir here: \\servername\ibi_parent\WebFOCUS77

Currently, I use UltraEdit as my compare utility.

I'd be open to any tool/methodology, to do the compare in WF 8.

One posibility: Looks like I can copy the two .fex's, via WFDS, to a folder on my workstation. Then do the UltraEdit compares on the copies.

Just a thought, Window-->Tile/Cascade menu options in Developer Studio.

I think this is your best option. Any fex that is in a content folder is stored in the the database.

i asked that very question in the expert room at summit..and got essentially the same answer....after a long blank stare.
i use TextPad, and its 'compare files' utility. and i use TextPad to 'search files' for all instances of some character string. A zillion times a day.

I've made a NFR to IB on this ('allow file compares in/via WFDS').

Thanks Susannah, for letting me know I am not going completely crazy. Crazy yes, just not completely.

Slightly off topic. We are preparing to upgrade to WF8 in the next year or so. We do a lot of searches on the apps folder using Windows Explorer. For instance we look for all instances where a Master File Description is used in order to identify places to make code changes. Does this discussion imply that our search technique would no longer be possible? Is there a WF8 tool that will do the search instead?

You can still search 'apps' in 8.

Here is a search for COUNTRY within applications, using UltraEdit, on a WebFOCUS 8 server:

What you can no longer do, and what is the concern of this post, is that you cannot, apparently, search throughout Management Reporting focexecs. MR code is stored within the 'Content' node in WF 8.

What is UltraEdit? Could I have missed a tool within WebFocus?

DLSuperC is the third party tool that I use for compares. As I said in the previous post, for searches we use Windows Explorer. As long as I can get to the folders I can search. Sounds like MR may be in a database in WF8 and might make those searches problematic.

UltraEdit isn't a tool in WF. It's just a text editor or sorts.

If they ever really include a true Source Control into Developer Studio, then using Eclipse would or could be a compare tool.
