It's not made clear in the recording why LAST COUNTRY remains blank over the series of CAR instances belonging to ENGLAND (and equals ENGLAND throughout the tour of FRANCE), when LAST COUNTRY appears in a Define. The reason is that, in reading through a Focus file, the buffer containing the LAST value of a field is refreshed only when the next instance of the segment containing that field is read -- so it remains constant as the series of child segment instances belonging to it are read.


PUTDDREC:

The presentation did not make clear how one can cause PUTDDREC to write a record only for selected data instances.

In general, in a DEFINE or COMPUTE expression that contains a conditional structure
IF condition THEN expression1 ELSE expression2
each of the expressions is evaluated only when fired by the condition: For each successive data instance, expression1 will be evaluated if condition is true but not if it is false, and expression2 will be evaluated if condition is false but not if it is true.

Thus one might use a Define or Compute of the form:

 RC/I1 MISSING ON =IF (some condition) THEN PUTDDREC(. . .) ELSE MISSING;

to write a record only for data instances where "some condition" is met (and printing RC will indicate which ones were selected).

This is great, but is there a pdf or powerpoint version available? It's nice to be able to hear the audio, but it is also helpful to be able to print the slides and add notes to them. Is there any way that future Focal Point presentations could be made available in both formats?
